Russia To Produce Massive Cargo Airship

A century after Russia launched its first airship from St. Petersburg, Moscow-based RosAeroSystems is planning to build a large transport dirigible with a 180 tonnes capacity and a range of 9,300 miles.

Founded in 1997, the company is made up of veterans from the Russian aerospace and defense industries and partners that include the Lavochkin Design Bureau, Babakin Space Centre and Moscow Aviation Institute.

Named after famed Russian space pioneer Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, the new cargo airship DT-N1 will be 880 feet (268 meters) long, 210 feet (64 meters) wide and have a maximum speed of 111 miles per hour. Powered by nine diesel engines, the airship’s all-metal body will have a total volume of 400,000 cubic meters.

Currently, there are 17 experimental, passenger and touring airships registered in Russia. In September 2008, RosAeroSystems’ AU-30 set a new world non-stop flight record for its type by flying 390 miles at an average speed 40 mph. The previous record of 233 miles was set by British airship GA-42 in 1990.

According to company President Gennady Verba, no date is set on when construction of the DZ-1N will begin: "The main goal of RosAeroSystems is to build an industry capable of initiating and successfully completing large airship projects. Our strategy is to take a step-wise approach in gaining experience, advancing the technology base and developing new facilities, " he explained.

The company has a number of airship projects in the works in anticipation of launching the flagship cargo dirigible. "It is necessary to progress through a number of stages before starting the design and build of the DZ-1N. We are achieving this by the development of the two-seat airship (and) the three-tonnes airship. Success in these building block programs and products provide the best proof of our competency to our investors and customers," he added.
